1) *Spy Hop Productions - In-Kind Marketing Request for Proposal*
Spy Hop Production's Multimedia Apprenticeship Program is currently seeking
proposals from local non-profits to enhance or develop a marketing and
communications video for them. Students enrolled in this five-month program
collaborate with select organizations to help create media for various
events and outreach. This pre-professional program offers valuable creative
and vocational training to youth and facilitates the development of critical
learning, media literacy and leadership skills.
The media service being offered consists of a 3-5 minute promotional video.
This in-kind service can be used for fundraising, recruitment campaigns,
online promotions, product enhancement, and demonstrations. In addition to
the value these services will add to participating organizations, it is also
an opportunity to support youth in your community.
If you intend to submit a proposal, please submit the attached Notice of
Intent to Apply by August 25, 2008. The final proposal deadline is September
2, 2008, and we plan to select the non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations by
September 8, 2008. Proposal requirements are listed on the following page.
After selection, a Spy Hop Productions Committee, which includes students
from the Multimedia Apprenticeship Program, will meet with the identified
project leads during the week of September 15 to finalize the project
description, plan and timeline. Media production will take place from
September 15th to November 17th and will be completed by December 15, 2008.

2)* **100+ Year Old Competition Opens for Entries*
The Utah Arts Council announces the 2008 Statewide Annual Visual Arts
Competition and Exhibition, Utah '08: Painting & Sculpture, is now accepting
application for entry.
The Statewide Annual Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition began in 1899 in
conjunction with the establishment of the Utah Arts Council, as a way to
honor and recognize artists living in the state. Each year the categories
rotate between Painting & Sculpture, Crafts & Photography, and Mixed Media &
Works on Paper.
The 2008 competition is open to all Utah artists 18 years or older who work
in a two-dimensional "wet media," including but not limited to gouache,
watercolor, oil, encaustic, resin, or tempera, or three-dimensional "solid"
works, such as those created through such processes as carving, modeling,
welding, casting, or molding.
The Statewide Annual is juried by two experts, one male and one female, in
the field of visual arts from outside of Utah. The jurors select
approximately 22 to 25 images to be included in exhibition and corresponding
catalogue. Additionally, six $500 prizes, three in each category, are
awarded by the jurors to exemplary submissions included in the exhibition.
Entries will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on September 22 to 25, 2008,
at the Rio Gallery at the Rio Grande Depot, 300 South Rio Grande Street (455
West) in Salt Lake City. Slide entries must be submitted no later than
September 25, 2008, to the Utah Arts Council, 617 East South Temple, Salt
Lake City, UT 84102.
The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place at the Rio Gallery

3) *Performing Group Links Utah and South America*
Vientos del Sur, or Winds from the South, will headline the third concert in
the Utah Arts Council's Mondays in the Park concert series August lineup.
Vientos del Sur will perform music and dances drawn from diverse regions of
South America.
Performing dances from Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, Vientos del Sur
draws on the traditions from both the rural regions, occupied by the fabled
cowboy gauchos, as well as the urban centers, which produced stylized
cotillion dances and dramatic partnered dances. In addition to performing,
two of the founders, Isabel Vega and Jose Barrios, also teach classes on the
traditional dance forms. Vientos del Sur was started in 2005 and is one of
three subsections of a larger organization called Agrupacion Cultural
Vientos del Sur. The other two sections, Casa de la Cultura and Voces del
Sur offer guitar lessons to children and operate a West Jordan radio station
on AM 1640, respectively.
Vientos del Sur, or Winds from the South, will perform at the Mondays in the
Park concert series on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Performances
take place in front of the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts located in
the center of Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. All Mondays in the Park
performances are free to the public.

5) *Keeping Zoo Animals Mentally Healthy Also Works On Pets At Home - Learn
More On Enrichment Day!*
One of the most important jobs at Hogle Zoo is keeping our animals healthy
and happy. Each day, the Zoo animal care staff plans out a schedule of ways
to keep animals mentally stimulated. Now you can find out more on this, and
how to keep your own animals mentally exercised by joining Hogle Zoo for the
9th annual Enrichment Day Saturday August 23, 2008 from 10 am to 2 pm; a day
dedicated to increasing our visitors' awareness of what enrichment is, and
methods we use at Hogle Zoo.
On Enrichment Day, visitors will explore six different areas that highlight
five different types of enrichment, which also apply to pets at home. These
Exploration Stations contain activities like "manipulative enrichment" to
paint like the elephants with a pool-noodle "trunk," watch keepers train
animals through positive reinforcement, and even win prizes in an Enrichment
Trivia scavenger hunt (completed entries drawn for a grand prize at 1:45
pm). Also available will be information on at-home enrichment for pets like
dogs, cats and reptiles—including information on how exotic animal training
works for our own furry friends and even recipes for homemade doggie treats!
At Hogle Zoo, behavioral enrichment is used to change an animal's
surroundings to promote the expression of natural behavior. Enrichment can
come in many forms, from meat hidden inside a pumpkin for the lynx, or
burlap sack for the orangutans. Keepers may also spray different scents in
animals' exhibits to exercise their heightened sense of smell.
So join Hogle Zoo for enrichment day and use our techniques to keep your own
pet happy-- Fido never had it so good! For more information, contact
Community Relations Coordinator Holly Braithwaite by email at

9) *U of U Receives $12 Million from Sorenson Legacy Foundation for New*
*Interdisciplinary Arts and Education Complex*
New facility will support a joint initiative by the College of Education and
the College of Fine Arts to conduct research and promote integration of the
arts in Utah schools, including professional development for new and
practicing elementary teachers, educational leaders and art specialists; $12
million is the largest gift to support the arts or arts and education in
University of Utah history.
The University of Utah announced today the Sorenson Legacy Foundation has
pledged $12 million to the university for the construction of an
interdisciplinary arts and education complex at its Salt Lake City campus.
It is the largest donation in support of fine arts or arts and education in
university history.
The new facility will be named the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts and
Education Complex and will be built at the southern entrance of the campus
adjacent to Milton Bennion Hall, east of the David Eccles School of
Business. Sorenson is a former elementary school teacher who founded Art
Works for Kids, an innovative program that has helped bring music, dance,
theater and the visual arts into many Utah elementary schools. She has been
a pioneer and long-time champion of making arts education available to
Utah's elementary school children.
A principal goal of the new interdisciplinary educational complex will be to
research and facilitate teaching methods for integrating arts education into
traditional core curriculum subjects such as math, science, history and
language arts. Working together with faculty from across the university,
educators from the College of Education and the College of Fine Arts will
identify best practices for this innovative teaching method, implement a
newly designed teacher education program and train arts specialists for
placement in Utah's elementary schools.
In addition to classrooms, arts practice areas and performance venues, the
new arts and education complex will house the Virginia Tanner Creative Dance
Program, six research and outreach centers and two university clinics. These
include a new Center for Integrating the Arts into Academic Learning, a new
Center for Math and Science Education, the Utah Reading and Literacy Center,
the Utah Education Policy Center, the Center for the Advancement of
Technology in Education and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Center on
Community of Caring. Outreach clinics include a satellite program for the
highly successful University of Utah Reading Clinic as well as the Education
Assessment and School Support Clinic.
The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts and Education Complex is scheduled to open
in 2011 at an estimated total cost of $30 million. For more information on
the new facility and the arts and education initiative, please visit

The sixth annual multicultural festival sponsored by the Salt Lake American
Muslim – a 501C3 Social Services nonprofit organization to be held on August
30 Saturday and August 31 Sunday, 2008 at Washington Square, 451 South 200

dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and honoring diversity through
world-class multi-ethnic cultural performances. This event has had
recognition from the Governor and both Salt Lake City and County Mayors.

American, Peruvian, Mariachi, Ahiska Turk Performers, Kenshin Taiko
Drummers, Irish Dance performers, and Zivio, and Bien Blamenco groups.
August 31 Sunday program is from 4 pm to 7 pm with performances by Lutheran
Social Services performers under the direction of Jose Bonilla,
Karen/Burmese, Falun Dafa. Bosnian performers, and Eastern Arts, and the
Salt Lake Saints groups.
An affiliated event is the screening of a Pakistani film cosponsored by the
Salt Lake American Muslim and Salt Lake Film Center:
IN THE NAME OF GOD 'Khuda ke liye' (in English) Unrated
Shoaib Mansoor - Director / Writer (writer) / Producer
Date: August 26, 7:00 pm SLC Main Library Auditorium 210 E 400 S
The film is about the difficult situation in which the Pakistanis in
particular and the Muslims in general are caught up since 9/11. There is a
war going on between the Fundamentalists and the Liberal Muslims. This
situation is creating a drift not only between the Western world and the
Muslims, but also within the Muslims. The educated and modern Muslims are in
a difficult situation because of their approach towards life and their
western attire. They are criticized and harassed by the fundamentalists and
on the other hand the Western world sees them as potential suspects of
terrorism just because of their Muslim names. This paradox is resulting in
great suffering for a forward looking Muslim.

13) *NEA Announces Domestic Indemnity Program*
In an effort to provide assistance to American museums while increasing
opportunities for audiences to view great works of art, the National
Endowment for the Arts recently added a domestic component to the Arts and
Artifacts Indemnity Act signed into law by President Bush in December 2007.
That bill authorized insurance coverage up of to $750 million for a single
exhibition and $5 billion in total for all to help in the reduction of
insurance costs for exhibitors. For the first time, exhibitions drawn from
U.S. collections are eligible for indemnity coverage while on view in
American museums. The international version of this highly successful
indemnity program has assisted non-profit institutions in covering the cost
of over 900 showings of prized artworks in communities all over America from
worldwide collections. More information on the application deadlines,
guidelines, and review process can be found in the press release here:

dimensional mixed media pieces. Each one represents a fleeting thought,
street scene, passion, screw-up, obsession, revelation, things to be
remembered, and things not to be repeated…you get the idea.
Sonya's long and varied career in the arts world has taken her many places.
She started out at the University of Utah, graduating with a BFA in studio
arts and printmaking while working as a research assistant on the Utah
Museum of Fine Arts African Art collection (all the while dabbling in
architectural history and design). Passion for African art landed her in art
history graduate studies at UCLA. Then she came home. She now works in the

Trial Begins For 30-Year-Old Cezanne
Theft<

In 1978, seven paintings, including a still life by the French impressionist
Paul Cezanne now worth tens of millions of dollars, were stolen from a
Massachusetts house. "The theft set off an international investigation that
led to Monaco, Geneva, London and -- finally -- to a retired lawyer."

Who Knew? Dance Is A Big Hit On TV <
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26203034/>
Take your pick -- there's no shortage of dance on TV. Inspired viewers maybe
even try out a move or two on the living room floor, or sign up for classes,
secretly hoping that they, too, could hack it as a professional. Dancing
days are here again, and the ratings are soaring.

A Life On Pointe<
http://www.smh.com.au/news/arts/as-for-pink-shoes-this-ballerina-is-spoilt-for-choice/2008/08/12/1218306893575.html>
"Maina Gielgud danced in her first pair of pointe shoes at the age of six.
That is at least five years before the bones are fully formed but,
remarkably, the glued and stiffened shoes did no harm to Gielgud's slender
feet. Half a century later she was still teaching ballet class in pointe
shoes. She reluctantly discarded them three or four years ago. It was, she
says, "a huge, major decision."
