6) *Funds Available for Humanities Programs*

The Utah Humanities Council (UHC) is currently accepting grant proposals in
the competitive grant ($5000 maximum) category from non-profit organizations
and groups to support future public humanities projects. Draft applications
are required and are due August 1 for projects beginning after November 1,
2008. After receiving staff comments, final applications are due September
1, 2008. Grant guidelines and forms are available online at
www.utahhumanities.org/Grants.htm or by calling 801-359-9670.

According to Cynthia Buckingham, Executive Director for UHC, "UHC grants are
intended to foster connections among cultural organizations, community
groups, and humanities scholars. Grant projects promote public appreciation
and understanding of human traditions, values, and issues through informed
public discussion." Projects must involve one or more of the humanities
disciplines, such as history, literature, languages and linguistics,
philosophy and ethics, cultural anthropology, archaeology, comparative
religion, jurisprudence, folklore, and history and criticism of the arts. For
a complete list of disciplines, visit UHC's website at
www.utahhumanuities.org. Organizations interested in a UHC grant need not
have formal non-profit status.

For the August deadline, UHC especially encourages innovative grant
proposals for humanities projects that focus on Native American history and
culture or that encourage community discussion. All such proposals will be
evaluated through UHC's established grant review process and must meet
already established guidelines posted on UHC website.

Brandon Johnson, UHC's Director of Grants and Historical Programs, says,
"Grants may be requested to support lectures, conferences and symposia,
panel discussions and discussion groups." He clarifies, "UHC grants also
support production or distribution of films, videotapes, audiotapes,
exhibits, and publications, if a strong live public programming component is
present. Programs should be free and open to the public." UHC will provide
examples of previously approved projects if an applicant is unsure of what
might qualify.

Wednesdays through Saturdays, July 23-August 2, in Studio 115 of the
Performing Arts Building on the University of Utah campus. Tickets

8) *Murray Arts in the Park presents Footloose, July 25-31*

Dance will be in the limelight in the Murray Park Amphitheater when the
Murray Arts Council presents Footloose July 25-31 (excluding Sunday).
Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets may be obtained in advance at the Karaoke Shop
at Murray Music or the Murray Parks and Recreation Office. They will also be
available at the gates, which open at 7 p.m. on show nights. Cost is $8 for
adults and $6 for children 12 and under and seniors 62 and over. Group rates
for 25 or more may be arranged at 571-3223.

Footloose is the stage version of a popular 1984 movie musical and features
exciting choreography. Ren McCormack is forced by family circumstances to
move from Chicago to tiny Beaumont. He quickly finds himself at odds with
the repressive atmosphere in the town and is stunned to learn that dancing
is not allowed anywhere in Beaumont. Eventually the ban is overturned, and
the teens are free to dance again. Getting there takes some doing.

year. Additionally,
the Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International opening ceremony has been
scheduled for Thursday, August 7th at 6 p.m., at Bountiful City Park. All

through the arts.

The Twilight Concert Series presents Grammy Award-winning hip hop group from
Amityville, New York De La Soul www.myspace.com/delasoul and up and coming
hip hop phenomenon The Cool Kids www.myspace.com/thecoolkids, July 24th at
7:00 p.m. This summer, the Twilight Concert Series presents a strong and
exciting group of musicians, some of whom defy definition, ranging from rock
to country to hip hop to bluegrass and every possible combination of the
above. This is a stellar season and the Salt Lake City Arts Council invites
everyone to come downtown on Thursday nights in July and August for the
Twilight Concert Series experience.

The 2008 Twilight Concert Series is presented every Thursday evening through

July 24

De La Soul

De La Soul is a Grammy Award-winning hip hop group from Amityville, New
York. Best known for their eclectic sampling and quirky, surreal lyrics,
they have made great contributions to the evolution of the jazz/rap
subgenre. At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul's debut album, "3 Feet
High and Rising", was hailed as the future of hip hop. With its colorful,
neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's
low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, their music established a distinct
and respected tradition in the hip hop world.

The Cool Kids

Part of the mid-2000s hip-hop movement, the Cool Kids are both an internet
and live show phenomenon. The duo of Mickey Rocks and Chuck Inglish met in
2005 after Mickey came across some of Chuck's beats online and liked what he
heard. In 2007, based on their material posted on their MySpace site, the
group caught the attention of Pitchfork, who later invited them to play at
their summer festival. This led to an opening spot on M.I.A.'s solo tour and
their debut EP, "The Bake Sale," which was released in January 2008.

12) *Color, Pattern, Creativity and Skill!*

An amazing display of color, pattern, creativity and skill will be on
display during the 35th Annual Quilt Show at the Springville Museum of Art.
The show opens Sunday, July 20th and will be on display through September
4th.

This popular show demonstrates the talents of some of Utah's finest fiber
artists and allows visitors the chance to experience the aesthetic beauty of
the craft. The quilt show is "A wonderful way of showing another art form,"
said Francine, who has been involved with the show for five years. "It lets
people know that quilts are not just things you sleep under, but things of
beauty."

The quilt show is hosted by the Springville Museum of Art, partnered with
the Utah Valley Quilt Guild, and is one of many juried shows exhibited
annually at the Museum. Quality in workmanship, design, color, originality
and general appeal are the principle criteria applied by the selection
committee for admission into the show. After the panel of jurors qualifies
the quilts, they will be displayed, and judged for ribbons/awards by judges
Bonnie Bryce and Penny Stephenson. Awards cover many different categories
including Best in Show and Directors Award.

Museum staff is continually impressed by the diversity of artists
represented, and the variety of talents displayed in the show. "Every year
is different" said Francine. On average the jurors choose from about 100
quilts a year, all of them submitted by quilters with a Utah connection. The
show represents artists of all ages and backgrounds, yet each quilt speaks
to its maker's dedication to the art of quilt-making.

"It couldn't come at better time of year," said Scott Sheltra, the Museum's
current Stewart Fellow. "With the Spring Salon, we have a great exhibition
of the abilities of Utah artists working within the traditional fine
arts. Then,
with the Quilt Show, we see equally talented people displaying different,
but equally impressive, crafts."

"I'm really glad to be here during the Quilt Show," said Museum Intern
Rachel Rose. "It makes me want to take up quilting."

The Springville Museum of Art is located at 126 East 400 South in
Springville. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10-5, Wednesday 10-9,
Sunday 3-6, closed Mondays. Admission to the Museum is free. For more

West Side Story To Go
Bilingual<http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/17/theater/17bway.html?_r=1&ref=arts&oref=slogin>

More than 50 years after the musical "West Side Story" had its original
Broadway premiere, it is set to return in February in a darker, grittier,
bilingual revival... Much of the dialogue -- both spoken and sung -- will be
in Spanish.

Too Much Study (What Young Actors Really
Need)<http://arts.guardian.co.uk/theatre/drama/story/0,,2290970,00.html>

How well prepared are young actors to succeed in a profession in which 80%
earn less than £10,000 a year, and is three years at drama school still the
best way to enter that profession? It's a question worth asking when it
increasingly seems that the entirely untrained can just stroll up for an
audition and get a shot at stardom in a reality casting TV show.

A Cartoonist Too
Far<http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jul/16/pressandpublishing.barackobama>

Cartoonists are some of the most painstaking, careful, shy and sensitive
people on earth, yet we do play with fire, toying with other people's (and
of course our own) most deeply held beliefs and most cherished illusions. Is
it possible to go too far? Of course it is. Should we go too far? Of course
we should.
