Italian History and Culture Series

Italian Identity Today

Focusing on its religious aspects

A presentation by Pino Luca Trombetta,

Professor of Sociology at the University of Bologna, Italy

Summary: As famous philosopher Benedetto Croce used to say, "The identity of
a Nation is its own history."

Italy has a 3,000 year history of being little states in competition with
each other, even during Roman times.

The Catholic Church is the only institution that has spread and preserved a
certain moral unity through the centuries, but with an ambivalent role.

On one hand, the Church, through its pervasive presence of dioceses and
parishes in all territories, has shaped the moral and psychological
personality of the Italians, thus providing them with a sense of belonging.

On the other hand, the Church, having its own state in competition with the
others, has slowed the formation of an Italian unified state, and
consequently of a national political awareness.

Italy gained its political unity only 150 years ago, and this delay has been
damaging to the collective character of the Italians.

Today's Italy is still a fragmented mosaic of cities and towns, rich in
peculiar and ancient traditions, dialects and cultures, but lacking a
national political identity. Because of this situation, Italians give more
importance to the personal interests of the individual, of the family, and
of the ìclanî. The interest of the nation as a whole is still perceived as
far and distant, although some progress has been made.

Professor Trombetta graduated in Political Science at the University of
Messina. He has been teaching at the University of Bologna for years. His
many publications are focus on topics of sociology of religion, such as
personal religious syncretism, Rodney Stark's theories and applications,
and the changes of religious behavior in immigrants.

US Government Eyes Non-Profit Endowments
(Warning!)<http://insidehighered.com/views/2008/06/19/fryshman>

There is a mindset that believes that the granting of a tax exemption
entitles the government to control how the resources of the nonprofit sector
are to be spent. This raises questions about the compact made with the
American people when the income tax was first imposed. There were
understandings at the time, one of which was that nonprofit institutions
carrying out charitable functions would be exempted from the income tax.

Reconsidering The Women Writers Who Came
Before<http://dissentmagazine.org/article/?article=1170>

In the 1970s a number of books were written to reappraise women authors and
the literature they produced. For the most part these books focused on
nineteenth-century Britain (to a lesser extent on the United States and
France) and they clearly 'started something'.

The Case Against Second-Hand
Books<http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/books/2008/06/why_i_hate_secondhand_books.html>

I can't stand second-hand books. For me, as a literary experience, they are
akin to sloppy seconds, a salad bar in a staff canteen at the end of a hot
weekday, or a recently-vacated cubicle in a public toilet. Let's be clear: I
don't merely have a mild preference for buying brand-new. No, I'm
digestively squeamish about used books.
