2)* **Art Access II Gallery is pleased to present the work of Chadwick
Tolley*
Art Access II Gallery is pleased to present the work of talented printmaker
Chadwick Tolley. Tolley will show approximately eighteen etchings and
woodcuts from June 20 through July 11. The Opening Reception for this
exhibit will take place on Friday June 20 from 6 to 9 PM, during the June
Gallery Stroll.
Tolley is known for his drawings and prints that are filled with visual
metaphors that suggest an ironic or humorous narrative. Each implied
narrative is the artist's intuitive response to material accumulated through
observation, introspection and visual mapping.
He says, "My work begins as a process of collecting. I collect photos,
textures, magazine clippings and notes from personal observation. Most of
these materials are assembled together in my sketchbook to create a sort of
a log book. It is in my sketchbook that I process ideas and create drawings
assemblages from which I develop prints."
Chad Tolley earned a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Utah in 2001
and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Oregon in 2005.
Art Access II Gallery is located at 230 South 500 West # 125 in SLC. Regular
gallery hours are M - F, 10 to 6.

3) *Art Access Gallery Hosts a Benefit for Artists With Leprosy*
Art Access Gallery is pleased to host an Exhibit and Art Sale to benefit the
Bindu Art School of Bharatapuram colony in India. Artists with leprosy from
Bindu Art School, some of whom paint with brushes attached to fingerless
hands by rubber bands, will show their colorful folkloric work at Art Access
Gallery from June 20 through July 11. One hundred percent of art sales from
the exhibit will benefit artists from the school.
Approximately 35 framed works of colorful folkloric paintings will hang in
the gallery from June 20 through July 11. In addition, unframed art will be
available for sale.
Werner Dornik, a multimedia artist from Bad Ischl, Austria, founded the
Bindu Art School in in 2005. He recalls his first encounter with people
inflicted with leprosy. He was 18 and on his first visit to India in 1977,
he saw some of them begging on the streets. In the following years, Dornik
returned to India many times and taught art workshops for people with
leprosy.
According to Dornik, "There's no teaching here. The aesthetics are all
their own. Students start with black and white, before they move on to blue,
yellow and red. When they finally get to use all the colors, there's an
unrestrained explosion of life: pointillist forests, pink sunsets and even a
hospital lined with patients thatπs a kaleidoscope of color and honesty, but
no pain."
Becky Douglas, executive director and founder of the non-profit Rising Star
Outreach of India, joined forces with Dornik, and has been instrumental in
establishing Bindu as a permanent art school. Douglas will be present at the
Art Access Opening Reception.
Bindu Art School gives a voice to people who have long been ignored by the
rest of the world. For millennia, the leprosy-affected have suffered in
silence - outcast from all normal society and usually shut away. Now,
through their paintings, they can communicate with the rest of the world.
Art Access Gallery is located at 230 South 500 West #125 in Salt Lake City.
Regular gallery hours are M - F, 10 to 6.

10)* **June edition of 15 Bytes*
It's the last Wednesday of the month, and that means it's time for the 15
Bytes editorial staff to begin their 70 hour + week (and weekend) putting
together the next edition of 15 Bytes.
And we could use your help. (No need to know how to code html or what a
dangling modifier is).
Make a pledge of support to our 2008 Spring Fundraiser and you'll make this
week a whole lot easier for those of us ignoring family and friends (and
other careers) to make 15 Bytes possible.
If you check out our blog (
http://www.15bytes.com) you'll get a sneak peak
from Geoff Wichert at this month's featured artist, Amanda Moore.
You'll also learn about the East Broadway Children's Fair (SLC), where one
of our regular photographers, Shalee Cooper, will be taking photos of your
kids (instead of working on 15 Bytes assignments).
So, if your pocketbook will allow it, do us a favor and make this week a
whole lot easier by making a pledge of support. Go to:

14) *Just One Week Away From History In The Making - The New Conservation
Carousel At Utah's Hogle Zoo!*
There was a time in our history when more than 10,000 carousels graced
communities across the United States. In their heyday, these beautiful rides
were constructed for children of all ages to enjoy, generation after
generation.
Take a spin with a classic twist! Be a part of Hogle Zoo history for the
Conservation Carousel opening ceremonies Saturday June 7, 2008 at 9:00 am
(gates open at 8:30 that morning only). As an added bonus that morning, the
very talented birds from Hogle Zoo's Meadow Gold World of Flight bird show
pull the ceremonial opening day ribbon! Then, visitors will become a kid
again as they watch local children with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of
Utah, Boys and Girls of Greater Salt Lake and Childrens Service Society of
Utah take the first carousel ride. Other activities that day include stilt
walkers and jugglers, up-close animal presentations, and free cotton candy
to the first 100 kids through the gate.
With its timeless appeal and classic design Hogle Zoo's new Conservation
Carousel is destined to be one of the Zoo's most beloved attractions, and
promises to become an instant icon for Utah families for many years to come.
This unique attraction features 42 exotic and endangered animals, each
beautifully hand carved in the style of an authentic carousel created in the
early 1900s. Created for Hogle Zoo by Carousel Works Inc. of Mansfield Ohio,
each hand painted carousel animal took artisans 30- to 40- hours from start
to completion. Truly a majestic sight, the Conservation Carousel is
a generation-linking spot for families, as well as a way to enrich guests'
understanding of Hogle Zoo's role in addressing global threats to the
natural world.
Each year, the Hogle Zoo supports conservation projects to carry out the
mission of education, conservation and recreation. As a help to these
conservation efforts both locally and around the world, a portion of the
proceeds from the Conservation Carousel will be used. Additionally, the new
Elephant Encounter solar panel installation made possible in part by a
partnership with Rocky Mountain Power's Blue Sky renewable energy program
will continue Hogle Zoo green efforts by potentially producing the
equivalent to the amount of energy needed to power the Conservation
Carousel. This solar energy system is grid-tied and net-metered, benefiting
not only the environment, but also local communities.
Adjacent to the current Wildlife Theatre and Elephant Encounter, the new
Oasis Plaza area is the premier spot for guests to be together with their
families. Not only is this a large and relaxing open space, Hogle Zoo
Executive Director Craig Dinsmore adds, "The Oasis Plaza will be a Fun Zone
with lots of activity to enhance guestsí visits, as well as great places to
just sit and enjoy the day." The Oasis Plaza is destined to be beautiful for
visitors locally, as well as helpful for conservation globally.
Tickets for the new Conservation Carousel are $2 for non-members, $1.50 for
members; part of the proceeds go toward conservation efforts associated with
Utah's Hogle Zoo. For more information about Hogle Zoo's new Conservation
Carousel and Oasis Plaza, contact Community Relations Coordinator Holly
Braithwaite at (801) 584-1729 or email at
hbraithwaite@???<hbraithwaite%40hoglezoo.org>.

Mountain Power's Blue Sky Program, Coca-Cola, Meadow Gold and Rocky Mountain
Chocolate Factory.

15) *Moa Knights: Annual Family Art Days To Celebrate Medieval Themes Of
Victorian Art*
The Brigham Young University Museum of Art will host its annual Family Art
Days celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, and Thursday,
June 12, 2008. Family Art Days provides fun, free summer activities that
encourage children of all ages to experience and appreciate visual art.
The theme for this year's Family Art Days, "MOA Knights," is drawn from the
exhibition of Victorian art currently on view at the museum, "Masterworks of
Victorian Art from the Collection of John H. Schaeffer." The works in this
exhibition depict powerful stories from ancient history and daily life in
the Victorian era with rich color and a wealth of detail.
"We hope that Family Art Days serves as a catalyst to help children develop
a life-long affinity for museums and a love of art," said Lynda Palma,
museum educator.
Activities at this year's Family Art Days will include:
- Story telling
- Face painting
- Renaissance and folk dance instruction
- Screenings of the animated film "Quest for Camelot"
- Medieval art activity
- Castle building
- Treats, balloons and other surprises
During the Victorian era, works of art frequently depicted stories that
reflected the medieval ideals of chivalry: courage, honor and the protection
of virtue. Victorian artists gravitated to these ideals, which they
considered a pure way of life, and created artworks that served as didactic
tools to instruct others in proper moral behavior. An example from the
Victorian exhibition is Sir Francis Bernard Dicksee's "Chivalry," which
depicts a heroic knight standing victoriously over his evil opponent as he
rescues a maiden in distress.
For the past 12 years, the BYU Museum of Art has hosted a Family Art Days
celebration to kick off the summer season with fun activities for children
that are also culturally enriching. Family Art Days events are designed to
involve children as active participants in the learning process. Admission
to Family Art Days is free. For more information, call the Museum of Art
Education Department at (801) 422-8287 or visit the museum's Web site at
http://moa.byu.edu.
"Masterworks of Victorian Art from the Collection of John H. Schaeffer," on
view at the Museum of Art through Aug. 16, 2008, gives visitors the rare
opportunity to view some of the most beautiful and well-crafted works of the
Victorian era from the private collection of Australian businessman and
entrepreneur John H. Schaeffer. The exhibition consists of paintings,
sculpture and works on paper by the luminaries of Victorian art including,
William Holman Hunt, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti,
John William Waterhouse and George Frederic Watts. Many of these pieces have
never been shown before in the United States.

Artworks that contain everything from chocolate syrup to exotic Amazon
fruits to television tubes and radio transistors often present daunting
challenges for museums, collectors, and artists themselves when it comes to
preserving their art for future generations... The issue is taking on
urgency as institutions face the passing of many 20th-century artists, and
consulting them about their ephemeral artwork is no longer possible.
