The evening features Beethoven's Overture to Egmont, Rouse's Trombone
Concerto and Sibelius' Second Symphony
Guest conductor and former Music Director of the Utah Symphony Joseph
Silverstein returns to lead principal trombone Larry Zalkind and the Utah
Symphony in the final concert of the 2007-2008 season. Zalkind will be
featured in Rouse's Trombone Concerto on a program that also includes
Beethoven's Overture to Egmont and Sibelius' Second Symphony. The
performances will be held at Abravanel Hall on Friday, May 30 and Saturday,
May 31 at 8:00 pm and there will be a Finishing Touches dress rehearsal on
May 30 at 10:00 am.
The program opens with Beethoven's Overture to Egmont; written for the play
by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1787), the piece features comforting tones
and high drama. Then Zalkind steps forward to present Rouse's Trombone
Concerto with the orchestra; awarded the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Music and
dedicated to the memory of Leonard Bernstein, the piece features the solemn
tones of the trombone and has some of the loudest and softest sounds ever
heard from a symphony orchestra. The evening closes with Sibelius' Second
Symphony featuring many contrasting themes from somber and confusion, to
bright and cheerful.
On Friday, May 30 at 10:00 am, the Utah Symphony will hold a Finishing
Touches dress rehearsal which will be open to the public. During this
rehearsal, audience members will experience the diligence and dedication
that goes into each performance. Tickets for the rehearsal are $18 for
adults, $12 for seniors and $4 for students.

A Celebration of Women in Sports
WHEN: Monday, May 19, 2008 at 7:00pm
WHERE: City Library, 210 East 400 South
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - SUGGESTED DONATION $5
About the films:
KICK LIKE A GIRL
Directed by: Jenny Mackenzie 24 min English
KICK LIKE A GIRL is the story of what happens when "The Mighty Cheetahs," an
undefeated all-girls soccer team, competes in the boys division. Refreshing
and triumphant, KICK LIKE A GIRL reminds us all of the lessons learned in
competitive athletics and how sports has been one of the most effective
instruments of social change in our lifetime.
"KICK LIKE A GIRL shows that when girls are given an opportunity to play,
they feel better about themselves, and believe they can do anything."
- Kristine Lilly, Captain US World Cup Soccer Team
ZANZIBAR SOCCER QUEENS
Directed by: Florence Ayisi 52 min English/Swahili with Subtitles
Women's passion for soccer transcends gender boundaries and challenges the
traditional image of women in Zanzibar, a predominantly Muslim society. This
is a rare and fresh look at the lives of women in Africa, with challenging
viewpoints from a community of women determined to achieve personal goals
beyond their prescribed traditional roles and expectations. This is the
story of women who are determined to define how they want to be seen;
playing soccer is a catalyst for personal change. (

11)* **Utah Shakespearean Festival Helps Long Reach Long Riders Raise $1,500
*
The Long Reach Long Riders stopped in Cedar City on May 13, 2008 for a
barbecue hosted by the Utah Shakespearean Festival (300 West Center Street,
Cedar City, Utah) to raise money for charity. The riders were in southern
Utah as part of their annual ride to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity
Fights AIDS and Behind the Scenes.
When Festival Scenery Director Richard Girtain discovered that the riders
would be coming through southern Utah, he immediately contacted Long Reach
Long Rider Loren Schreiber about stopping in Cedar City. "Loren was super
excited when he got my email," said Girtain. "A big part of the ride is to
raise awareness and make connections in addition to raising money."
In 2007 the riders raised over $70,000 for the charity, and they hope to
raise a considerable sum this year as well. To help the riders reach their
goal, the Utah Shakespearean Festival hosted a fundraising barbecue for
Festival company members and the Southern Utah University College of
Performing and Visual Arts.
The cost of the barbecue was $10 per person, and Festival employees
purchased the food so that every dollar raised went to charity. The
fundraiser was attended by more than 150 company members and raised more
than $1500.
The Long Reach Long Riders will travel throughout Utah, Nevada, Arizona and
Colorado to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Behind the
Scenes. A complete map of their route can be seen at
http://www.lrlr.org/Map.html.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the nation's leading industry-based
HIV/AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization. Behind The Scenes is a
charity that provides support for entertainment industry professionals in
crisis.
The Utah Shakespearean Festival's 47th summer season opens on June 19 and
runs through August 30. The season includes Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de
Bergerac, Moliere's The School For Wives, Shakespeare's The Taming of the
Shrew, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Othello, and the popular musical
Fiddler on the Roof.

15) *Paint the Parks: National Park Art at the St. George Museum*
On view from June 7 - July 17, 2008
PaintAmerica's "Paint the Parks" Art Competition comes to the St. George Art
Museum from June 7 to July 17, 2008. This exhibit, that tours the nation,
helps fund the PaintAmerica mission of supporting the visual arts and
artists across the country. A portion of the proceeds from "Paint the Parks"
are contributed annually to the National Parks Foundation and the
PaintAmerica Scholarship Fund.
Paint the Parks100 with the Mini Top 50 is America's leading competition and
exhibition designed to illustrate the beauty and significance of America's
National Parks. Paintings must depict one of our nation's 390 areas
supervised by the National Park Service. Juried paintings are chose by a
three person panel of nationally recognized artists or arts professionals. For
the 2007 show, the jurors are Liliane Francuz, Ann Trusty, and William Scott
Jennings. In each of the three National Park Regions that Paint America
uses to divide the nation, a winner is chosen, plus the Grand Prize Purchase
Award of $10,000.
Art, amazing and transforming art, helped create the desire to found the
Park system in order to protect and preserve the American marvels for us -
for all time. The National Parks are an American invention, and
as the Utah writer, Wallace Stegner said the National Parks are "the best
idea we ever had".
The St. George Art Museum is ideally suited to show art of the National
Parks due to St. George's beautiful red rock location near the famed parks,
Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon.
Indeed the Paint the Parks exhibit is a prelude to A Century of Sanctuary:
The Art of Zion National Park exhibit which is the most important and
comprehensive exhibit of Zion National Park ever mounted. The latter
exhibit will be featured at the St. George Art Museum from August 25, 2008
to January 24, 2009.
The magnitude of A Century of Sanctuary: The Art of Zion National Park
necessitates closure of the St. George Art Museum from July 18 until August

exploration of bookbinding possibilities for the classroom. This tour
guides participants through basic bookbinding vocabulary, materials, and
techniques, while exposing them to the wonders of binding styles and
decorative options. On the itinerary: single-sheet, folded books, paste
paper, Gocco printing, Japanese stab bindings, boxes, pop-ups, stitched
pamphlets, and much more. Discover how to do it all on a shoe-string or
no-string budget. Return from this bookmaking excursion with souvenirs
to enhance classroom instruction and enrich language, science, and math
curricula. Book this sightseeing extravaganza today!
Krissy Giacoletto, photograph archivist in the Special Collections
Department of the J. Willard Marriott Library, took a long side-trip
into the world of bookbinding while attending the University of Utah.
She never returned. The benefit of Krissy's enthusiasm and excitement is
apparent as she teaches numerous groups the secrets of turning blank
paper and grey board into functioning pieces of art.

underwritten for educators.
Relicensure points are available from the Utah State Board of Education.

Bag of Books
July 11th & 12th
Friday & Saturday 9:00-5:00
Conjure up a variety of curious books for your bag of classroom tricks.
>From charming pop-ups to enchanting portfolios, learn bookbinding magic
to enhance all areas of classroom curricula. With a little hocus-pocus,
participants create a wealth of structures and use techniques such as
embossing and envelope construction to emphasize stories, history,
science, math and all kinds of writing. Use discussion and shared ideas
on content, writing prompts, and poetry ideas to create a new rabbit to
pull out of your educator's hat. Each person takes home a whole bag of
books including -abracadabra- one made from a tiny cereal box!
C. J. Grossman has taught thousands of children and adults how to create
their own books and specializes in teaching educators. She has an MFA
from California College of the Arts and a B.S. in Social Welfare from
San Francisco State University. Grossman's own work is exhibited
nationally. She lives in Berkeley with her imaginary dog, Carrot, whose
name changes every week.

underwritten for educators. Relicensure points are available from the Utah
State Board of Education.

Small theatres have always struggled to acquire and maintain space, but the
problem has gotten worse during the real estate boom in large urban areas
(the current home-mortgage crisis notwithstanding).

Why Isn't More Music By Women
Performed?<
http://www.newmusicbox.org/article.nmbx?id=5576>
Following the introduction of blind auditions in the 1970s, which greatly
reduce bias, women now make up about half of the string and woodwind players
in American orchestras. Women occupy prominent administrative positions in
major musical institutions. Women direct and design productions at important
opera houses. Women also make up about 30 percent of composition students in
American colleges and conservatories.
So where is their music on concert programs?

Evidence Of A Rocky Ballet
Future<
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/09/AR2008050900157.html>
The company didn't envision its ambitious New Works Festival, the
centerpiece of the San Francisco Ballet's 75th-anniversary season, as a
microcosm of what's wrong with the ballet world. But the fact that this
large outlay of money, time and talent -- unprecedented in its scope --
produced more mediocrity than revelation points to a big problem for ballet.
Self-renewal is not its strong suit.
