Lake valley. Just a few mental health facts regarding Hispanics:
· Hispanics are identified as a high-risk group for depression,
anxiety and substance abuse
· Hispanic girls exhibited more depressive symptoms than African
American or white girls
· Close to 30.3% of Hispanic female high school students in 1997
contemplated suicide
· Mental illness rates are higher among U.S. born and long-term
residents than recent Hispano immigrants
· Hispanics are twice as likely to seek treatment for mental
disorders in settings outside mental health specialties
· Studies show there are few Spanish-speaking and Hispanic providers
· Cultural barriers show Hispanic youth are generally misdiagnosed
as having anger problems or conduct disorders
· Hispanics are over-represented in the criminal and juvenile
systems. Many have misdiagnosed or not diagnosed mental illness
· Hispanics and African Americans are over-represented in the
justice system and receive harsher treatment
Some of the services NAMI Utah provides:
1. Free education, support & advocacy
2. Information about brain disorders, treatment and services
3. Family to Family and support group programs
4. Help. Hope. Healing.
While the Hispanic and minority communities have been traditionally
underserved, NAMI Utah recognizes and now undertakes to address the mental
health needs of this non-traditional clientele group in the coming future.
