Major Function
Provide in-depth academic and career advisement to SLCC students, utilizing
academic and career assessments, career library materials and transfer
resources to assist students in developing educational and career plans.
Assist students in all SLCC degree, diploma, certificate and completion
programs. Facilitate intrusive and follow up advisement of Hispanic/Latino
students with the goal of increasing retention especially with those who
need to maintain an expected level of academic performance at the
institution.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Provide intrusive academic advising to increase connections with and
persistence/retention of Hispanic/Latino/a student.

Focus advising on Hispanic/Latino/a students, particularly those on Academic
Standards. Assist students with developing an academic plan to improve their
standing when on Academic Alert, Academic Warning, Conditional Enrollment or
Probation. Develop prevention and intervention strategies and schedule
frequent meetings with students to monitor individual student progress
toward academic goals. Facilitate academic activities in support of Academic
Standards (e.g., learning styles and career inventory interpretation,
participation in tutoring and study groups, attending strategies for success
workshops, etc.). Coordinate services with faculty and other departments
(e.g., Financial Aid, Health and Wellness, tutoring programs, etc.) to meet
the needs of students. Follow-up with students who have received instructor
notification letters as an early intervention strategy for success. Develop
recognition strategies for students in good academic standing.

Identify, outreach to, and assist on-campus Hispanic/Latino/a students, who
scored in ESL, math, reading or writing developmental classes. Assist them
with learning resources, faculty referrals, and with developing an
educational plan.

Participate in and support on-campus activities for Hispanic/ Latino/a
students (e.g., club and multicultural activities, special orientations and
recognition events, etc.).

Assist in compiling data (e. g., on student contacts, academic standing,
retention), conducting assessments and/or writing reports.

Participate in recruitment and community outreach events to
Hispanic/Latino/a populations as needed.

Provide general advisement to SLCC students.

Advise and assist all students in understanding the requirements for all
SLCC degree, diploma, certificate and completion programs; advise students
in developing academic timelines, exploring course work, sequencing and
selecting courses and developing class schedules; advise students in
understanding transfer programs to four-year institutions and planning
efficient transfer; provide information and referral to various campus and
community resources.

Advise and assist all students in becoming aware of their values, interests,
abilities, and clarifying their academic and career goals. Assist students
to utilize career assessments, career library, and other resources.
Interpret career assessments, assist students in the career planning, goal
setting and decision making process. Assist with identification and
retention efforts for undecided students.

Make presentations such as study and life skills; conduct orientations and
workshops.

Participate in work groups, committees and/or task forces meetings.

Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications - Education and Experience
Education and Experience:

a. Bachelor's degree required. Emphasis in educational psychology,
education, communication or other related field preferred. Master's degree
in related field preferred.

b. Three (3) years of full-time, paid related work experience required.
Higher education experience strongly preferred. (Part-time related work
experience may be substituted for full-time work experience on a prorated
basis.)

c. Additional related education/training may be substituted for work
experience. (Two years education equal to one year of the required work
experience.)

Job Qualifications - Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:
a. Academic advising and student success theory and practice.
b. Learning theory and teaching methods.
c. Standard career assessments (e.g., Myers Briggs, Campbell Interest Skills
Survey, Choices)
d. College enrollment procedures, college resources and services (e.g.,
registration, financial aid).
e. Educational tests and placement interpretation (e.g., CELSA, LOEP, TOEFL,
CPT, ACT).
f. Transfer of credit policies and procedures within Utah System of Higher
Education.
g. Social/educational resources and services available in the community.
h. Diverse student needs such as students from diverse ethnic backgrounds,
low-income students, students with disabilities and particularly
Hispanic/Latino/a student needs.
i. Program development and implementation.
j. Current social, economical, and political issues affecting
Hispanic/Latino/a population.

Ability to:
a. Communicate effectively in writing and orally; maintain open
communication with colleagues and administrators.
b. Advise students in developing educational plans that meet their needs and
goals.
c. Lead discussions and make presentations to large and small groups.
d. Demonstrate initiative, creativity, team work, conflict
resolution/decision making skills.
e. Organize, retrieve, manage and present large amounts of informational
details about college programs.
f. Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse college
population.
g. Update and train advisors on selected academic/career advising techniques
for target population and/or program information.
h. Prioritize assignments; plan and carry out objectives.
i. Work well under pressure; learn quickly.
j. Maintain a flexible schedule with some evening shifts and campus
rotations required.
k. Utilize a variety of computer software, including college data systems
and internet.
l. Advocate for all students.
m. Work ethically with confidential information..
n. Initiate and maintain coordination with other department offices to
assist with educational needs of students.
o. Monitor the academic progress of Hispanic/Latino students through case
management tracking.
p. Implement activities related to promoting the specific area of
responsibility such as facilitating retention and academic activities in
support of Hispanic/Latino/a student learning.
q. Support outreach efforts to Hispanic/Latino students.
r. Bilingual (Spanish language) strongly preferred.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties


Special Instructions
Position open until filled with priority deadline of May 16th.

Position requires some evening and weekend assignments as well as travel to
other campuses and/or off-campus events.

services and serving as a student advocate with faculty, sponsors, community

plan to build on strengths, overcome weaknesses, and achieve training and
vocational success.
6. May monitor enrollment opportunities, notifying students when their
program of choice is available.
7. May facilitate new student orientation.
8. Assist with student outreach activities as required.
9. Facilitate reception desk coverage as necessary.
10. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees.
11. Provide appropriate student case management functions, including
tracking, documentation and reporting of student activities including
classroom performance and attendance, employment and participation goals and
their achievement, and other support for students in order to motivate
students toward success. This can include Progress Reports, Exit Interviews,
and requests for Program Extensions and other instruments.
12. Review student progress throughout their course of study, supporting the
student by evaluating, advising, and acting as liaison between students,
