I think Jed Smith mentions "packs" on his long walk to California after losing half his men and all horses to Indian attack. I doubt they had any back packs as we know them so the "packs" must have been something made on the spot. Most likely just one's gear wrapped in a blanket, etc and tied with a cord/strap worn over a shoulder or tumpline style.
