. The award recognized her life long work in defense of women and children¹s
rights and those subjected to social and economic discrimination. She was
marked for death when she joined the fight for democracy against those who
denied the basic freedoms of speech, assembly, and press in Iran. Dr. Ebadi
is the first Iranian and the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace
Prize.

In addition to her battles in the courtroom, Dr. Ebabi has written a number
of academic books and articles focused on human dignity and freedom. She is
the founder and leader of the Association for Support of Children's Rights
in Iran. In 2006, Random House published her memoir, Iran Awakening.
