The annual Eugene England Memorial lecture, sponsored by the Utah Valley
State College Religious Studies Program and the English Department's
Guest Author Series, will be given by Douglas Thayer, professor of
English at Brigham Young University, on Tuesday April 15 at 7 p.m. in
room 101 of the Liberal Arts building (LA).
Professor Thayer's lecture will address the question, "Does Anybody
Need Serious Realistic Mormon Fiction?"
Professor Thayer has been called "the Mormon Hemingway" by the Midwest
Book Review. He has published two collections of stories, the
award-winning Under the Cottonwoods and Other Mormon Stories, and Mr.
Wahlquist in Yellowstone and Other Stories. Most recently he published
the novel The Conversion of Jeff Williams (Signature Books, 2003), and
the memoir Hooligan: A Mormon Boyhood (2007).
All events take place at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah, one
hour south of downtown Salt Lake City, off of the I-15 University
Parkway Exit (turn left or North at 800 W; park in the North visitor lot
