4) *The Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library presents
Drawing at the Press: Fluid Approaches to Innovative Printing*
Book Artist Sara Langworthy shatters the constraints of traditional fine
printing with her unconventional letterpress techniques. This workshop,
hosted by the Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library, runs
April 4th & 5th, Friday and Saturday, 9:00-5:00. Sara's secrets for the
innovative use of pressure prints, excessive layers, misregistration,
monoprints, collagraphs, photopolymer plates, stencils, and handwork allow
beginning and advanced printers to augment their artistic repertoires. What
a blast
Sara Langworthy trained in bookbinding, printing, and papermaking at the
University of Iowa Center for the Book where she is currently
printer-in-residence. Recipient of numerous awards and residencies, Sara
collaborates with the College of Saint Benedict Literary Arts Institute,
printing poetry broadsides for their imprint One Crow Press.
Sara's teaching resume is extensive and her artists' books are found in a
number of national collections.
Since 1995, the Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library has
encouraged appreciation for the art and history of the book by offering
classes, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, and K-12 programming to the
communities it serves. The program rests firmly upon the Marriott Library's
rare books collection, numbering over sixty thousand books.

In 1980, autism was a relatively rare disorder, diagnosed in one in 10,000
children in the United States. Now it is one in 150. AUTISM: THE MUSICAL
counters today s bleak statistics with one woman s optimistic pledge to lead
a group of autistic children in defying diagnosed expectations by writing,
rehearsing and performing their own full-length musical. Both on and off
stage, AUTISM: THE MUSICAL is a call-to-arms, bringing attention to a
modern-day epidemic, all the while celebrating the way the human spirit can
overcome any challenge.

8) *Utah Arts Council Announces Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest
*
High school students in Utah invited to compete in national poetry
recitation contest
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation present Poetry
Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, in partnership with the Utah Arts
Council. Poetry Out Loud is a program that encourages high school students
to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and
competition. Schools are invited to participate in classroom and school-wide
contests, advancing a school representative to a state competition on March
27, 2008. State champions will advance to the National Finals, to take place
on April 28-29, 2008 in Washington, DC.
Amanda Fujiki from Provo's Meridian School was selected as the 2007 Utah
Poetry Out Loud champion and represented the state in the 2007 National
Finals in Washington, DC, last May.
Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by
capitalizing on the latest trends in poetry - recitation and performance.
The program builds on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen
in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of rap music among
youth. Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken
word, and theater into the English class. Through Poetry Out Loud, students
can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about
their literary heritage.
The NEA and the Poetry Foundation have partnered to provide administrative
grants to state arts agencies, prizes, and will coordinate the National
Finals next April. With this support, the Utah Arts Council will aim to
continually increase the number of participating high schools in Utah.
Additionally, the NEA and the Poetry Foundation will provide State Arts
Agencies with free, standards-based curriculum materials for use by
participating schools. These materials include print and online poetry
anthologies, a teacher's guide with sample lesson plans to help instructors
teach recitation and performance, and an audio CD featuring well-known
actors and writers such as James Earl Jones, Anthony Hopkins, Alyssa Milano,
and N. Scott Momaday. Program materials are available for download on the
website,
www.poetryoutloud.org, which offers additional resources.
Utah State Finals of Poetry Out Loud
The Poetry Out Loud State Finals for Utah will take place at 7 p.m. on March
27, 2008 in the auditorium at the Main Branch of the Salt Lake City Public
Library. The competition is open to the public for free.
How to get involved in Poetry Out Loud
High school teachers who are interested in participating in Poetry Out Loud
should know that the program requires less than two or three weeks of class
time. High schools that wish to be part of the official Poetry Out Loud
program must contact the Utah Arts Council to participate. The Utah Arts
Council will determine which schools are eligible to take part in the
official Poetry Out Loud program. Schools that are not in the official
program may conduct their own contests using the online resources. Contact
Guy Lebeda, Literary Arts Manager at glebeda@???, call 801.236.7553 or
visit
www.poetryoutloud.org for more information.
Poetry Out Loud prizes
Students who participate in the official Poetry Out Loud program may be
eligible to compete in the state and National Finals in 2007. Each winner
at the state level will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to
Washington, DC, to compete for the national championship. The state
winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry
books. One runner-up in each state will receive $100, with $200 for his or
her school library. Poetry Out Loud will award a total of $50,000 in
scholarships and school stipends at the National Finals, with a $20,000
college scholarship for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion.

10) *Ruess Artwork on View at Rose Wagner Gallery*
A set of 25 block prints by lost artist Everett Ruess will be on view at the
Art Gallery at the Rose Wagner Center from March 14-30, 2008 in coordination
with Salt Lake County and the world premier of Plan-B Theatre's play, THE
END OF THE HORIZON.
In 1934, Ruess, a twenty-year-old artist and writer, mysteriously
disappeared near Escalante, Utah. While traveling through the backcountry of
Utah, he recorded his travels through wood block prints, essays, and poems.
Since his disappearance, Ruess has emerged in Utah folklore as a mythic icon
?C the embodiment of the wilderness he revered and respected.
The prints on view are from the last five years of Ruess' life. They portray
a variety of natural scenes and chronicle his travels along the California
coast, high in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and among the deserts and
canyons of Arizona and Utah. The exhibition includes two photographs, two
Lino Blocks, and a poem by Ruess as well.
This exhibit was re-curated in 2004 by the Utah Arts Council and is now an
active part of the Traveling Exhibition Program. For more information on the
program or how to schedule it in your city or town, contact Laura Durham at
ldurham@??? or call 801.533.3582.
THE END OF THE HORIZON: In November 1934, at the age of 20, artist and
naturalist Everett Ruess disappeared in the canyon country near Escalante,
Utah. Nearly a century later Ruess is a near-mythic figure―Jon Krakauer
devotes a section of his book "Into The Wild" to him. THE END OF THE HORIZON
is a searing drama about the Ruess family and the power of the unknown. To

15) *Dürer and Rembrandt Prints on Display at the St. George Art Museum Plus
Royden Card Woodblock Prints of Zion*
The Inspired Line: Selected Prints of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn
from the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art, opening April 5,
2008 at the St. George Art Museum is a traveling showcase of prints from two
renowned masters. Even though they created their artwork a century apart,
connections between Dürer and Rembrandt's religious pieces are significant
and intriguing. While the exhibition explores the extraordinary nature and
output of each artist's prints individually, the focus of The Inspired Line
is the contrasts and parallels that can be drawn between Dürer and
Rembrandt's works. This exhibition is toured by Exhibits USA, which is the
national touring division of Mid-America Arts Alliance, a non-profit
regional arts organization.
Visitors to The Inspired Line will enjoy a rare opportunity to view a
combined 40 works which demonstrate several print techniques, including
etching, woodcut, engraving, and drypoint. Many of the prints are presented
as pairs of works in which Dürer and Rembrandt each executed his own version
of the same subject matter, including The Death of the Virgin, St. Jerome,
and The Crucifixion.
On April 15 at 7pm, the featured Art Conversation will be on this exhibit &
Rembrandt by Art Historian, Nancy Ross Ph.D.
The Inspired Line: Selected Prints of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn
from the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art is organized by the
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and toured by Exhibit USA. The purpose of
Exhibits USA is to create access to an array of arts and humanities
exhibitions, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms
and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life
in local communities. Exhibits USA is a national division of Mid-America
Arts Alliance, a private, nonprofit organization based in Kansas City,
Missouri and founded in 1972.
A series of Royden Card's woodblock prints of Zion National Park, From
Blocks to Rocks, will also be on display. This exhibit will feature some of
the tools he uses to create his wood blocks and prints. Card, a well known
artist, now living in Virgin, Utah, created these prints as part of the
requirements for his Master's of Arts degree from Brigham Young University.
While woodblock prints are a very old form of printing, we are privileged in
these exhibits to see prints from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Contemporary
eras.

16) *Wood Takes Root at the St. George Museum
*
On view from April 5 to May 24, 2008
The St. George Museum will present WOOD TAKES ROOT, an exhibition that will
showcase the state of the art in contemporary woodwork. The exhibition will
shatter preconceptions about the material and the language employed by
woodworkers with works that are sculptural, painterly and unlike anything
that has preceded them.
The exhibition will include artists featured in the book New Masters of
Woodturning, published by Fox Chapel Publishing to coincide with the
exhibition. The book features an international array of artists, sharing
their amazing turning techniques, their creative influences, and the
inspiration that fuels their distinctive designs. The exhibition will
feature numerous respected modern artists who are pushing the boundaries of
contemporary wood art, including Binh Pho, Marilyn Cambell, Jacques Vesery,
and J. Paul Fennell.
WOOD TAKES ROOT is guest-curated by Kevin Wallace, co-author of New Masters
of Woodturning. "I'm honored that the St. George Museum has agreed to
present an exhibition of artists featured in New Masters of Woodturning,"
Wallace says. "While everyone has some experience of both art and
woodworking, visitors to the museum will encounter exciting new approaches
to self-expression by artists from the U.S., Europe, New Zealand and
Australia. They will see exotic woods, cutting-edge sculpture and unexpected
painterly approaches to creating art in wood."
WOOD TAKES ROOT will also feature an exhibit titled, Dennis Elliott: Recent
Work. "Dennis Elliott is one of the leading artists working in wood today,"
Wallace says. "His sculptural bowls and wall pieces combine the primitive
and modern in a bold new manner."
