1) *SLAC's New Play Sounding Series presents a reading of CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE
by Carter W. Lewis.*

The Salt Lake Acting Company's New Play Sounding Series presents a reading
of CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE by Carter W. Lewis. The reading will be held Monday,
February 18th at 7:00pm and is free to the public, thanks to the support of
American Express and Salt Lake County's Zoo, Arts, and Parks Program. There
will be a discussion immediately following the play. Mr. Lewis, regrettably,
is unable to come due to scheduling conflicts.

The play will be directed by Robin Wilks-Dunn.

The cast will feature Michael Todd Behrens, Stephanie Howell, Richard
Scharine and Arika Schockmel. Leah Langan will be Stage Manager and Reader.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE by Carter W. Lewis is a comic drama that follows Marlee
(Stephanie Howell), a political radical and bookstore owner, as she attempts
to deliver her father (Richard Scharine), a retired Supreme Court Justice,
to California after the death of her mother. Mother had left Marlee several
items, including a first edition of Henry David Thoreau's pamphlet on Civil
Disobedience and, perhaps inadvertently, mysterious letters to another women
that calls into question the family's entire life. Father is shaken beyond
repair. On the circuitous path to settling father, Marlee meets up with a
number of characters that illuminate the face of our democratic three-ring
circus (Michael Todd Behrens and Arika Schockmel in multiple roles), and the
conflict between personal and civil duty erupts.

NOTE:

The New Play Sounding Series is free to the public, however, audience
members will receive a ticket as they enter the building at SLAC, on a first
come-first serve basis. The building will be open at 6:00pm for the 7:00pm
reading.

2)* Salt Lake Choral Artists To Perform "And All That Jazz"*

February 16 Concert to feature contemporary works conducted by
internationally recognized choral conductor Dr. Brady Allre

Award-winning choral conductor Dr. Brady Allred and the Salt Lake Choral
Artists will perform "And All That Jazz," on Saturday, February 16th at 7:30
p.m. at Libby Gardner Hall on the University of Utah campus. Featuring a
variety of contemporary works by three acclaimed composers, "And All That
Jazz" will showcase a high-energy evening of toe-tapping jazz accompanied by
a three-piece jazz trio.

Works to be performed include a charming piece, Images, written by Rob
Landes in which scat singing by the 180-voice choir will put a snap in
everyone's fingers. George Shearing's sublime work, Songs and Sonnets, sets
seven Shakespearian texts to music without diminishing the original poetic
beauty. And written for Shearing's 75th birthday, John Rutter's Birthday
Madrigals is a five-movement composition that draws from classic madrigal
texts to form a brilliant masterpiece.

Mark Pearce, Hunter High School's Madrigals conductor, will be joining Salt
Lake Choral Artists for Songs and Sonnets. Instrumentalists for "And All
That Jazz" will include Laurel Enke and Cameron Rose, piano; Jason Roberts,
drums; and Matthew Oakden; string bass.

4) *The Utah Symphony Presents Lemony Snicket's The Composer is Dead*

The Utah Symphony will introduce young listeners to classical music through
an entertaining murder mystery

The Utah Symphony will present the musical collaboration of composer
Nathaniel Stookey and popular children's author Lemony Snicket (A Series of
Unfortunate Events) titled The Composer is Dead on a program that also
includes Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. The performance will be held at
Abravanel Hall on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00 pm.

"The Composer is Dead" introduces young people to classical music and
different instruments of an orchestra in a fun and entertaining way. The
piece features a narrator who becomes a sleuth investigating the murder of
the composer by looking for clues in all the sections of the orchestra, and
even on the podium. Local actor Mark Gollaher will act as the narrator and
investigator for the half-hour journey, reporting on conversations with
every section, creating a different voice for each one.

The program ends with the dissecting of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. Audience
members will learn about the structure and music of the piece as Maestro
David Cho pulls out a number of melodies, rhythms, dynamic choices and
harmonies for inspection. Then he and the orchestra will put the dissected
piece back together and perform the entire work.

Tickets for evening performances are $6 for children and $11-$17 for adults.
Tickets can be purchased by calling (801) 533-NOTE (533-6683),

5) *The SLC Film Center is pleased to announce a special advance screening
of JAMES CARROLL'S CONSTANTINE'S SWORD: a film by Oren Jacoby*

with Special Guest: James Carroll, New York Times Best Selling author of
Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews: A History

Academy Award-nominated director Oren Jacoby helmed this documentary
adaptation of James Carroll's nonfiction book of the same name. An anti-war
activist, Carroll delves into Christianity's history to learn how a faith
founded on peace could come to be used as a tool for war-mongers. Jacoby
follows Carroll as he explores the phenomenon from its origins in ancient
times up through the modern-day U.S. military.

This screening is part of the Westminster College Film and Lecture Series,
sponsored by the Office of the President of Westminster College and the
A.S.W.C. and curated by the SLC Film Center.

WHAT: JAMES CARROLL'S CONSTANTINE'S SWORD, a film by
Oren Jacoby

Opening nationwide in theatres in April, distributed by First Run Features

WHO: Special Guest James Carroll, New York Times
Best Selling author of Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews: A
History

WHEN: 7pm, Wednesday, February 20, 2008

WHERE: Westminster College, Vieve Gore Concert Hall, 1840
S 1300 E (northwest corner of campus)

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

About the Film: Directed by Oren Jacoby 93 min (2007)
Not Rated JAMES CARROLL'S CONSTANTINE'S SWORD, a film by Oren Jacoby, is the
story of James Carroll; a Roman Catholic on a journey to confront his past
and uncover the roots of religiously inspired violence and war. His search
also reveals a growing scandal involving religious infiltration of the U.S.
military and the terrible consequences of religion's influence on America's
foreign policy. Carroll focuses on Christian anti-Semitism as the model for
all religious hatred, exposing the cross as a symbol of a long history of
violence against Jews and Moslems. The film brings the history of religious
intolerance to life, tracing it as a source of the fanaticism that threatens
the world today. At its core JAMES CARROLL'S CONSTANTINE'S SWORD, a film by
Oren Jacoby, is a compelling personal narrative — a kind of detective story
— as one man uncovers the dark areas of his own past, searching for a better
future.

Julliard-trained quintet of brothers and sisters is rocking the
international concert world with their fresh, new takes on the classics. So
when these modern young adults with totally unassuming airs sit down to

are shattering the preconceptions of those who find classical music
inscrutable or intimidating.

Harlem Gospel Choir

cultural scene for over two decades. Using the power of music to share joy
and faith, the choir also actively raises funds for childrenπs charities,
emulating their motto,

'bringing people and nations together and giving something back." This
performance, part of the U's Black Awareness Month activities, will touch
your soul, raise your spirits, and have you clapping and swaying in your
seats.

The Ten Tenors

8) *The Utah Symphony And Keith Lockhart Present Grieg's Peer Gynt*

The Utah Symphony will present Peer Gynt for the first time

Music Director Keith Lockhart leads the Utah Symphony Chorus, guest soloists
and the Utah Symphony in Grieg's Peer Gynt for the first time. The
performances will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the de Jong
Concert Hall at BYU at 7:30 pm, Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February
23, 2008 at Abravanel Hall at 8:00 pm. Associate Artist of the Berkshire
Theatre Festival, Jonathan Epstein will act as the narrator for both
performances.

The evening's program will feature Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt, which was
written as incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's poetic drama that mixes
obscure symbolism, Norwegian fairy-tale, fantasy, satire and allegory. Grieg
embedded this highly recognizable music with the sights, sounds and folklore
of his home country, Norway.

Epstein joins the orchestra to relate the adventures of Peer, a liar, an
egotist, and an all-around irresponsible and unpleasant character, who
leaves his homeland to roam the world in a restless search for happiness;
his coarse behavior earning him the contempt of everyone he encounters.

11)* BYU MOA Lecture to Examine Influence of Pageants on American Patriotism
*

WHAT: Megan Sanborn-Jones, a professor in the Department of Theatre and
Media Arts at BYU, will present an illustrated lecture titled "The Right
Kind of Patriotism: American Historical Pageants Past and Present."
Admission to the lecture is free.

WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

WHERE: BYU Museum of Art Auditorium, Brigham Young University
campus, North Campus Drive, Provo, Utah 84602

WHY: "America has long used historical pageants to establish a sense of
nationalism by staging founding events in spectacular ways," Sanborn-Jones
said. "Exploring pageants from colonial times to today reveals how they
create a particular vision of patriotism shaped by nostalgia, religious
conservatism and fireworks."

This lecture is the third in a series of four lectures offered in
conjunction with the current Museum of Art exhibition "Minerva Teichert:
Pageants in Paint." This exhibition examines how the American mural and
pageantry movements influenced Teichert's artistic production through 47 of
her large-scale narrative murals. Some of the works in the exhibition come
from private collections and have not been seen publicly for many years. The
exhibition will be on view through Monday, May 26, 2008.

themselves in beautiful works! It's time to head to Utah's Hogle Zoo for the
World of the Wild art show Saturday February 9 to Sunday April 6, 2008.

six-years-old to professional adult artists hailing from all over the state
of Utah.

To Be Understood By History, Write Neatly <http://www.slate.com/id/2183903/>

The ferocious disagreements over transcriptions of Robert Frost's diaries
have made headlines lately, but the problem is larger than any single

their innermost ambitions and fears as human beings. No one wants to get

The Atrocious State Of Public Intellectualism In
America<http://insidehighered.com/views/2008/02/04/dileo>

Public intellectuals in America are merely 'one side of an argument,' so to
speak. From the general public's point of view, they are either Republican
or Democrat; liberal or conservative; left-wing or right-wing; pro-choice or
pro-life; and so on. Public intellectuals signify or are reduced by the
general public to nothing more than a position -- and usually an extreme one
-- on a topic of contemporary social and political concern.
