Dear Flavor Lovers:
Boy, did we have a busy Thanksgiving! It was great to see so many people in
the store hungry for great things to put on Thursday’s table. The mood was
joyful, the pace hectic, and all of it completely enjoyable. With full
stomachs, we’ve slid quietly into the official holiday season. Gift and grocery lists
are out in full force. And good food is still a top priority. There are
already some fantastic items in the store perfect for parties, hostess gifts, and
wish lists. Read all about them in the upcoming FreshNews bulletins or check
them out for yourself in the store!
Don’t Call It Fruitcake! Luscious Panettone from Italy
When you put the words “Christmas” and “cake” together, folks
automatically tend to think of the dense, almost unidentifiable lumps of fruitcake. You
know, the eternally recycled gift, doomed to be passed along from person to
person, office party to family party.
But if you haven’t already discovered the wonders of Italian Christmas
pastry, there’s reason to not wrinkle your nose and feign politeness. Panettone is
a lightly and eggy cake studded with the region’s best candied fruits, nuts,
and just about anything creative from its maker. This year, we’re featuring
two kinds. If candied fruit just isn’t your thing, you’re in luck. Colavolpe’
s Fig & Chocolate Panettone offers succulent dried Italian figs and chunks of
dark chocolate. These toothsome morsels are suspended in a golden eggy domed
cake, topped with Marzipan. While the classic pannettone, from La Vecchia
Dispensa, contain plump raisins soaked in their own balsamic vinegar. Both
varieties are splendid for a party or a solitary treat. Serve in slices or pair
with a favorite gelato. And in the off chance that you have any leftover,
simply slice them and use them in a favorite French toast or bread pudding
recipe!
Colavolpe Fig & Chocolate Panettone (Italy)—$39.00/each

La Vecchia Dispensa (Italy)—$29.00/each

Holiday Roasts

Don’t think turkey consumption is over just yet. Wight Family Farms is ready
for another round of holiday evening and will have fresh local free-range,
hormone and antibiotic-free turkeys ready for the oven. But if guests are
waving the white flag at the mention of turkey, consider a succulent ham from
Niman Ranch. These flavorful hams come from family farms throughout the Midwest
that raise their pigs in open pastures without antibiotics and growth
hormones. You can really taste the difference from supermarket brands. But if you’re
yearning for something really traditional, we can order fresh goose from D’
Artagnan. Honey-roasted goose with whole chestnuts, anyone?
Wight Family Farms Free-Range Turkey—$1.99/lb

Niman Ranch Ham—$6.49/lb
Fresh D’Artagnan Christmas Goose—$11.99/lb
